Prior to the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, the Taliban government had dramatically cut the production of opium -- the plant whose derivatives are the raw materials for heroin. The U.S.-led invasion, predicated on the idea that Osama bin Ladin had orchestrated the 9/11/01 attack, had the effect of restoring opium production to pre-2001 levels.
Opium from Afghanistan is the source of most of the world's illicit heroin.

What Is Heroin?

Heroin (diacetyl-morphine) is a semi-synthetic drug of the opioid analgesic class. It is a close cousin of morphine, which is found in the opium poppy (Papaver Somniferum), along with other alkaloids such as codeine. A heroin molecule is a morphine molecule with two acetyl groups added, which allow it to more easily cross the blood-brain barrier. Thus heroin is much more potent than morphine, and can be self-administered more quickly through smoking or injection. These properties incline its users to more readily succumb to addiction than users of other opiates.
Sold in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in patent medicines, it was eventually designated a Class 1 substance, not recognized to have any medical value. As a black market drug with strong powers to numb pain and produce apathy, heroin has been the center of a violent economy plaguing inner cities in the United States and elsewhere for decades.

The amount of land in production for opium production fell by 90 percent between 2000 and 2001.

The reduction of opium production in tonnage was even more dramatic the reduction in land under cultivation. Production was quickly restored following the post-9/11/01 US invasion.

during the early morning hours of January 22, 1991, landing in a vacant field several hundred yards from Colonel Sabow’s backyard.  The helicopter normally landed next to the control tower at El Toro, but on January 22^nd the chopper landed across the airfield at a point that was nearest to Colonel Sabow’s quarters.  Four men got out, headed for the Sabow residence on Fifth Street.  The helicopter then immediately took off, went right across the airfield, and landed where it usually does, at the tower. The pilot got out, said he was having some trouble, but was checking it  out and that’s why he had landed across the field.  He then went on to say that he  wasn’t sure and he may do the same thing again, and he did, according to Dr. David Sabow.  And shortly after 0900, the pilot landed there again.  Dr. Sabow said he was told the pilot picked them up from the records. However, he  feels the records are false and the pilot picked up only one man, “accounting for the three that remained behind at the scene of the crime.”

I appeared on this week’s edition of the Press TV show Remember Palestine. I used the platform that Press TV graciously provided me with to argue that those of us who want to bring an end to the Israel-Palestine conflict ought to capitalize on the evidence of Israeli involvement in 9/11 rather than neglect the subject because it is deemed by some to be “controversial”.
I think most would agree that without the U.S. government altering its stance vis-à-vis Israel that there is little hope for justice in Palestine. The only conceivable way of the U.S. undertaking a volte-face vis-à-vis Israel is if a sufficient proportion of the citizens of the U.S. become conscious of a) the extent to which Israel and its affluent supporters are distorting U.S. Middle East policy as well as b) the extent to which such pro-Israel forces lack any respect for the U.S. taxpayer.
Unfortunately, Arabs and Muslims have been dehumanized by opportunist journalists and careerist academicians who have jumped on the anti-Islam, pro-Israel bandwagon, post 9/11, which has resulted in a preponderance of U.S. citizens lacking any empathy with the beleaguered Palestinians and the other benighted inhabitants of the region.
I argued on Remember Palestine that the abundant evidence linking Israel to 9/11 provides the pro-Palestinian movement with a unique opportunity to foster such empathy among the U.S. body politic. Those in the pro-Palestinian movement, I argue, must stop shying away from the evidence linking Israel to 9/11 and must actively educate the people of the U.S. and other nations that nearly 3000 U.S. citizens were slain on 9/11 with the complicity of the Israeli government.

Arabs and Muslims have been dehumanized and stigmatized in the Western media

I suspect that many U.S. citizens would be unmoved if you informed them that 3000 or even 3 million Arabs and Muslims had been killed by Israel. Indeed Dr. Gideon Polya has deduced that the (largely Israeli concocted) 9/11 wars have resulted in the deaths of as many as 2.3 million Iraqis and 4.5 million Afghans and, yet, the anti-Islamic 9/11 wars continue unabated. The most recent phase of the 9/11 wars includes an illegal incursion into Libya and increased meddling in Syria. The main goal from the perspective of the Israeli government has been to foment sectarianism and civil war in the Middle East so those who dwell in the Middle East are fighting each other rather than the Israeli hegemon.
I am of the view that the pro-Palestinian movement ought to emphasize the fact that 3000 mostly Caucasian and non-Muslim U.S. citizens were killed on 9/11 with the complicity of the Israeli government. It’s not that U.S. or Caucasian blood should be deemed more valuable than Palestinian or Arab blood. The Western media have created an intellectual environment where, in the eyes of many U.S. citizens, Palestinian and Arab blood is valueless. Thus, those of us who are serious about promoting peace in the region ought to emphasize crimes of the Israeli government that will have the most efficacy in mobilizing support for the Palestinians.
It is likely that if enough U.S. citizens became aware of the Israeli involvement in 9/11 that they would begin to voice criticism of the U.S.-Israeli “special relationship.” Thus, this is the tack I am taking in most of my media appearances. I encourage others to do so.
I very much hope that those academicians who focus on the Israel-Palestine conflict such as Norman Finkelstein, Stephen Walt, John Mearsheimer, Noam  Chomsky, Ali Abunimah, Ilan Pappé and others will likewise acknowledge the evidence implicating Israel in 9/11 as this evidence could be decisive in ending the Israel-Palestine impasse. Such scholars have since 9/11 presupposed the veracity of the official story of 9/11 and in doing so have based much of their scholarship on a false-premise, namely that bin-Laden and al-Qaeda were responsible for 9/11, when this theory, which is a conspiracy theory, has been debunked by numerous credible scholars including David Ray Griffin who has written ten books addressing very specific claims made by adherents to the official story of 9/11 demonstrating them to be inconsistent with the available evidence and in many cases even with the laws of physics and of aerodynamics. Indeed many ears should have pricked up when, in the immediate hours following 9/11, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine was blamed and footage of Palestinians dancing, albeit from 1993, was projected to the U.S. public.

I think history will not absolve those in the so called “pro-Palestinian” movement who have helped to suppress evidence implicating Israel in 9/11. Imagine if the Afrikaners, during the 1980s, out of desperation had killed 3000 Americans and blamed this act of terrorism on the ANC so as to make its enemies (in this case black Africans) the perceived enemy of the American people thus justifying the continuance of the U.S.-South African “special relationship”. Would the anti-apartheid movement not have been feckless, indeed insane, if they had failed to capitalize on this blunder of the pro-apartheid forces?
It does a disservice to the Palestinians and non-Palestinian victims of Israeli foreign policy to try to divorce the Palestine Question from the broader manifestations of the locus of power which James Petras has referred to as the “Zionist Power Configuration” (ZPC). This ZPC operates at both a global and local level as was indicated on 9/11. As Naomi Klein accurately wrote in the Guardian “[the] Likudisation of the world [is] the real legacy of 9/11.”
For those of us living in Western countries, especially in North America, the most efficient way for us to engender empathy with the Palestinians in the eyes of uninformed Westerners, especially U.S. citizens, is for us to illuminate Israel’s involvement in the massacre of U.S. citizens on 9/11. A failure to capitalize on Israel’s most egregious crimes and blunders is tantamount to complicity in the oppression of the Palestinians and the other victims of Israeli foreign policy.

Ecumenism - Assisi

On January 24th [2002], Buddhist chants and Christian hymns resounded inside a huge plastic tent decorated with an olive tree. Representatives of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Jainism, Confucianism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, and followers of Tenrikyo and African tribal religions including (Voodoo) joined their prayers so that, with one voice, they could ask their respective deities to grant peace to the world.

Crosses and other religious objects were removed by Vatican officials so that non-Christian religious leaders would be free to pray in the manner in which they are accustomed. One by one, religious leaders holding small, glass oil lamps lined up at the podium and read each of the 10 points of a communal commitment. Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople was the first of 11 religious leaders to speak. Chief Amadou Gasseto, who described himself as the high priest of followers of Avelekete Vodoo in Benin, echoed the patriarch's point about personal behavior and its decisive role in creating peace or conflict.

After sharing their "testimonies for peace," Pope John Paul and Patriarch Bartholomew led the Christians from 17 Orthodox churches and 14 Anglican and Protestant communities into the lower basilica for an ecumenical prayer service. There were 3 Orthodox Patriarchs taking part. Not to be outdone by Constantinople, the Russian Patriarch Alexy [ Ed. note: Moscow Patriarch Alexei II - Drozdov by his KGB name] led a delegation from Russia. It is noteworthy that the largest delegation to respond to the Pope's invitation was made up of Orthodox clergy, who apparently no longer believe that our Saviour is the only hope for the "peace of the world."

Notice the constant 911 motif that the Vatican used over and over again.

Many Faiths Plan to Join Pope's Pilgrimage to Assisi

VATICAN CITY — In a response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Pope John Paul II will lead representatives of Islam and many other religions on a peace pilgrimage to the medieval town of Assisi next week.

Two months ago, the Roman Catholic pontiff invited the religious leaders to travel with him to the birthplace of St. Francis on Jan. 24 to "proclaim before the world that religion must never become the motive of conflict, hate and violence."

Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said Friday that Orthodox, Eastern and Protestant Christians, along with Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Zoroastrians and members of the Tenrikyo, Shinto and traditional African faiths have accepted the invitation.

The Orthodox delegation will be led by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople and will include patriarchs or representatives of the Greek Orthodox churches of Alexandria and All Africa, Antioch and All the East, Jerusalem, Moscow, Serbia, Romania, Finland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Poland and Albania.

Also sending high-level representatives will be the Anglican, Reformed, Scottish Presbyterian, Methodist, Disciples of Christ, Pentecostal, Lutheran, Baptist, Mennonite, Quaker and Moravian denominations, the Salvation Army, Conference of Secretaries of the Christian World Communions and the World Council of Churches.

Ten rabbis, including three from the United States and two from Jerusalem, and 29 Muslim scholars, imams, grand muftis and sheiks also will participate.

Both the Dalai Lama and the archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, declined the pope's invitation because of other commitments.

The religious leaders in attendance will offer testimonials to peace, pray separately, eat a "frugal meal" in the refectory of the Sacred Convent of Assisi and end the pilgrimage by declaring their common commitment to peace and lighting a lamp of peace.

"Never again violence! Never again war! Never again terrorism! In the name of God may every religion bring to Earth justice and peace, pardon and life, love!" the pope will say, according to a text issued by his Office for Liturgical Celebrations.

It will be the third time John Paul has gathered with leaders of other religions to pray for peace in the home of the 13th century saint who lived in poverty and dedicated his life to peace and brotherhood.

The first Assisi meeting was Oct. 27, 1986, during the Cold War; the second was Jan. 9-10, 1993, amid strife in the Balkans.

In issuing his invitation to the third Assisi pilgrimage, the pope spoke of the "worrying tensions" caused by the attacks of Islamic terrorists on New York and the Pentagon and said he wanted in particular for Christians and Muslims to pray together. The Muslim delegation will be the largest on the pilgrimage.

The 81-year-old pope and his fellow religious leaders will make the two-hour trip to Assisi, 140 miles north of Rome, by rail, leaving from St. Peter's Station inside the Vatican.

The station was built under Pope Pius XI in the early 20th century, but Pope John XXIII was the first pontiff to use it, making a pilgrimage to the shrine of Loreto and Assisi on Oct. 4, 1962, the eve of the Second Vatican Council.

The Vatican spokesman said John Paul and his guests will travel in six or seven unmodified Italian railroad cars with double rows of seats on either side of a central corridor. The train's only stop will be a technical one--to switch from a diesel to an electric-powered locomotive 150 yards outside Vatican walls.

Security will be tight but discreet, Navarro-Valls said. He said a helicopter will hover above the train as it travels from the Vatican to Assisi and back.

Around the sharing of these precious faiths’ holy events there were many significant meetings among the 80 plus people gathered, including interfaith figures such as Rev. Dr Marcus Braybrooke, President of the World Congress of Faiths, Community Cohesion figures such as Dr Husna Ahmad, CEO, Faith Regen Foundation, Marilyn Brummer of the League of Jewish Women and humanitarian influential figures such as Dr Saif Ahmad, (MADE in Europe), Dr Hojjat Ramzy, Proprietor of the Iqra Girls’ School in Oxford and a presentation by Daniel Hurter about Children’s Relief Bethlehem.
