DSC_9791Vienna – Kawther Salam – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas thanked his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer for upgrading the status of the Palestinian representation in Austria from a general delegation to the level of a mission. President Abbas emphasized in his speech before Dr. Fischer the gratitude towards Austria for its historical positions of support for the Palestinian people, their rights, and for upgrading the status of the Palestinian representation in Austria during a joint press conference held today April 30, 2013 at the presidential offices at the Hofburg.
Abbas thanked Austria for its vote to accept Palestine as a full member of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and as an observer state in the UN General Assembly, and for its continuous support towards the Palestinian people and  institutions, particularly to their support for the refugee relief agency UNRWA. Abbas told the journalists that he had briefed President Fischer on the latest developments regarding the prospects for peace in the Middle East and the latest efforts to resume the peace process on the basis of a two-state solution in the borders of 1967.
“I also briefed President Fischer about the Palestinian reconciliation and explained to him the circumstances in which we can reach this stage”, said Abbas. He added: “We spoke about the dangers and the continuing expansion of the settlements on Palestinian land in the West Bank and the occupied city of Jerusalem, and I gave him further explanations about the extraordinary situation of the 4000 Palestinian prisoners in israeli jails.”
President Abbas stated that the meeting had started by talking about the seriousness of the current situation in the Middle East, which is affected by the neighboring countries “where we exchanged views on the need of support of a peaceful solution in those countries, especially Syria”.
