Palestine Cry: The Coming of Antichrist to Jerusalem

St. Cyril of Jerusalem 315 – 386 AD

And after these shall arise Antichrist and having by the signs and lying wonders of his magical deceit, beguiled the Jews as though he were the expected Christ, he shall afterwards characterize himself by all kinds of excesses of cruelty and lawlessness and he shall perpetrate such things for 3 years and 6 months.

Antichrist will exceed in malice, perversity, lust, wickedness, impiety, and ruthlessness and barbarity all men that have ever disgraced human nature. Hence St. Paul emphatically calls him `the man of sin the son of perdition, the wicked one, whose birth and coming is through the operation of Satan, in all manner of seduction and iniquity. (2 Thessalonians 2). Through his great power, deceit and malice he shall succeed in decoying or forcing to his worship two thirds of mankind; the remaining third part of men will continue true to the faith and worship of Jesus Christ most steadfastly. But in his satanic rage and fury, Antichrist will persecute these brave and devout Christians during three years and a half, and torture them with such an extremity of barbarity, with all the old and newly invented instruments of pain, as to exceed all past persecutors of the Church combined. He will oblige all his followers to bear impressed upon their foreheads or right hands the mark of the Beast and will starve to death all those who refuse to receive it.

This one shall seize the power of the Roman Empire and shall falsely style himself Christ. By the name Christ he shall deceive the Jews who are expecting the anointed and he shall seduce the Gentiles by his magical illusions.

And, indeed, his wonders will be false.  “Just as the Son of God, having been incarnate and having become man,” says St. Ambrose of Milan, “proved His Divinity by signs and wonders, so will Satan open himself to man in order to show himself as God by means of false wonders.” (St. Ambrose of Milan, Commentary on 2 Thessalonians.)  They are false by their origin, for they will belch forth from the father of lies through whom will come the Antichrist.  Thus, the Fathers of the Church taught, “Satan will use the Antichrist as a tool, acting himself through him.” (St. Cyril of Jerusalem,  Catechetical Lecture 15.)  The miracles will be false in their essence because they will not surmount the natural laws of nature,  -- as do true miracles, worked in harmony with the will of God, which defeat the laws of nature.  Being false in all respects, they will yet appear as true.  Thus, Apostle Paul says that they will manifest great power.  In addition, these words of the Apostle clearly show the difference between false wonders and deceit or treachery, which the Antichrist will use as a stumbling block for the weak in faith.  Saying that the enemy of God will come with every power and sign, he adds, and with all deceit of unrighteousness in them that perish (II Thess. 2:10).

“God will allow persecution from the Antichrist not because He cannot stop it, but because He desires, as usual, His strugglers to be crowned,” and for this reason, “the reverent ones among the living will be taken up into the clouds, receiving, as a reward of honor, that which is higher than any man.” St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture 15 This speaks of the resurrection of the saints at the Second Coming of Our Lord Jesus and NOT of some Pagan-Gnostic totally utterly blasphemous cowardly lying Satanic heretical apostate secret rapture. The clouds are the shekinah glory of the saints in their glorified resurrected physical bodies.

ON THE CLAUSE, AND SHALL COME IN GLORY TO JUDGE THE QUICK AND THE DEAD; OF WHOSE KINGDOM THERE SHALL BE NO END, DANIEL vii. 9--14.

But this aforesaid Antichrist is to come when the times of the Roman empire shall have been fulfilled, and the end of the world is now drawing near. There shall rise up together ten kings of the Romans, reigning in different parts perhaps, but all about the same time; and after these an eleventh, the Antichrist, who by his magical craft shall seize upon the Roman power; and of the kings who reigned before him, three he shall humble, and the remaining seven he shall keep in subjection to himself. At first indeed he will put on a show of mildness (as though he were a learned and discreet person), and of soberness and benevolence: and by the lying signs and wonders of his magical deceit a having beguiled the Jews, as though he were the expected Christ, he shall afterwards be characterized by all kinds of crimes of inhumanity and lawlessness, so as to outdo all unrighteous and ungodly men who have gone before him displaying against all men, but especially against us Christians, a spirit murderous and most cruel, merciless and crafty. And after perpetrating such things for three years and six months only, he shall be destroyed by the glorious second advent from heaven of the only-begotten Son of God, our Lord and Saviour Jesus, the true Christ, who shall slay Antichrist with the breath of His mouth, and shall deliver him over to the fire of hell.
