The Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper addressed the Knesset on Monday Jan. 20 2014, as part of his four-day visit to Israel and the West Bank.
In his speech, he praise for the Jewish State and emphasized the strong ties between the two countries, Canada and Israel. The prime minister reiterated his government’s position that “Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state is absolute and non-negotiable” a position many in the government see as a precondition for the successful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Harper told Israeli parliamentarians that Canada supports Israel because it is a moral imperative: “Canada supports Israel because it is right to do so. It is a Canadian tradition to stand for what is principled and just, regardless of whether it is convenient or popular,” he said.
The Canadian prime minister stated that the Canadian army uses of Israeli technology in Afghanistan.
According to The Canadian Press, “Israel has received private assurances Canada stands ready to help defend the Jewish state.”. Canada and Israel already do c0-operate intensively on strategic and intelligence matters. The relationship between the Canadian military intelligence and police forces became more entrenched under the current Harper government.
