DSC_4213“It cannot be taken for granted that the relations between different religious communities of a country are as excellent as they are in Austria. I am also proud of the fact that the relations between the religious communities and the government are characterised by mutual recognition and great respect. This is something I would like to thank them for personally”, said Federal Chancellor Werner Faymannat the reception of representatives of Austria’s recognised Churches and religious communities at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna today (Tuesday evening). The gathering was held to celebrate the traditional fast-breaking at the end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting.
Vienna’s Archbishop, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the President of the Islamic religious community, Fuat Sanaç, as well asChief Rabbi Paul Chaim Eisenberg highlighted the constructive cooperation between the Austrian religious communities and the government. Integration was mentioned as an example of an issue where the religious communities could make a valuable contribution to society.
DSC_4200Attention had to be drawn to the importance of mutual understanding and togetherness, especially in times of crisis, stated Faymann: “In the wake of the economic crisis, we are facing major challenges in Europe as well as all over the world. We have to come to terms with social gaps and high unemployment rates among young people. The crisis is not yet over.”
Austria had coped with the consequences of the economic crisis more successfully than other countries. “Austria is often referred to as a role model in the EU. This is not only due to the Austrian economy and the employees but also to the political climate. We bring common values and cooperation to the fore”, said the Chancellor.
The religious communities played a vital role in the Austrian society: “They are very committed to social issues, youth work and care for the elderly. Today I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to thank them for this engagement”,concluded the Federal Chancellor
