Prime Minister Resigns After 15 Days

Ramin Hamad allahAccording to sources, Dr. Mohammed Mustafa, the economic adviser to Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian “president” whose presidency expired in 2009, an American citizen of Palestinian origin, caused troubles to the recently appointed Prime Minister Dr. Rami Hamdallah, a professor of the English language and the director of Al-Najah University in Nablus, forcing him to submit his resignation to Abbas earlier today, barely two weeks after having been sworn in by Abbas.
Dr. Hamdallah left his office in Ramallah at noon Thursday in a private car after offering his resignation.
Dr. Mustafa had been rejected by the western community (USA and EU) when president Abbas submitted his name among other names of Palestinians whom he wished to appoint to positions of minister in his new cabinet.
The western community refused to give Dr. Mustafa their confidence because of “some doubts”. The “doubts” meant that Dr. Mustafa is not trusted and is suspected of involvement in gross financial irregularities while serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Palestine Investment Fund (PIF), where a million Euros disappeared during his tenure. It later came out that he had deposited the money into a personal bank account of President Abbas in a Jordanian bank.
Additionally, Dr. Mustafa lacked the confidence of the western community since he had worked at the World Bank in Washington, DC.  The western community preferred to give their confidence to the academic Dr. Hamdallah.
Due to this situation, “president” Abbas resorted to force his “economic adviser” upon his new prime minister. Dr. Hamdallah, and had him appoint Dr. Mustafa as the vice-prime minister in order to continue having access to the money of the PA. Since his appointment, Dr. Mustafa had started behaving as if he was the actual prime minister, relegating Dr. Hamdallah into the shades. This situation forced Hamdallah to submit his resignation today.

Tayib Abdul-Rahim, and intelligence chief Majid Faraj, representatives of Abbas went to Hamdallah’s home in Anabta, the district of Tulkarem city trying to convince him to reconsider his resignation.
