Austria and Austrians welcomed 2013 with a cyclist who shortly before midnight “cycled” up a 60m long rope to start the countdown to 2013, which will be the “year of cyclists” in Vienna. After that, waves of spectacular fireworks exploded over Heldenplatz where the Austrian President and Chancellor reside, and opposite the Parliament and the City Hall. The new year fireworks at Heldenplatz were one of the major attractions of this years new year trail organized by the city government. The New Year’s Trail in Vienna included 12 locations around the inner city, with spectacular programmes to suit all tastes and ages. There were many different ways in which the Austrians could spend the last night of the year in an unforgettable way in Vienna. According to the media, about 790.000 persons took part in the celebrations in the city.
