The Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations
Al-Nakba was marked not only by the loss of Palestine as a country, the destruction of its society, and the exodus of over half of its native population, but also by the destruction of Palestinian villages. The violent uprooting and subsequent exile of over 750,000 Palestinians was accompanied by the actual physical destruction and obliteration of their villages. Contrary to some claims, Palestine had not been an "empty land." Historical records confirm that in 1947, prior to the U.N. partition resolution, Palestine comprised more than 900 Palestinian villages, almost half of which were destroyed by the Israeli forces. More than 400 Palestinian villages were completely razed to the ground, their homes and buildings bulldozed or blown up, and wiped off the face of the map.
Dozens of major urban centers of the Palestinian people, such as Acre, Beersheba, Baysan, Lydd, Majdal, Nazareth, and al-Ramla, which were populated exclusively by Palestinians, were depopulated. Other major cities, of which the majority population was Palestinian, such as Safad, Tiberius, Haifa, West Jerusalem, and Jaffa, were emptied of their native Palestinian population as well. All the assets of these cities, including, inter alia, buildings, houses, parks, and schools, as well as countless personal assets, were appropriated intact by the new Israelis. Upon the lands of those villages that were totally decimated, new Israeli towns and settlements were built.
Studies by numerous Palestinian, Israeli and international historians confirm the number of these destroyed villages to be at least 418 and possibly up to 472. The following is a list (alphabetical according to administrative district or subdistrict) of the 418 Palestinian villages, within the pre-1967 borders of Israel, which were destroyed and depopulated in 1948. This list and the above-mentioned figures are taken from All That Remains, a comprehensive study of these villages by historian Dr. Walid Khalidi.
