RAMALLAH,(PIC)– Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will meet with Israeli Vice Premier Shaul Mofaz on Sunday, a Palestinian official said, on Wednesday, pointing out that the meeting has nothing to do with the negotiations which broke down in 2010.

Nimer Hammad, the political adviser to President Abbas, said in press statement that “an upcoming meeting between Abbas and Israeli deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz will be held on Sunday”, stating that it is not certain yet if Mofaz will be delivering a letter from the Israeli foreign ministry to Abbas or whether he will be passing on his personal views during the meeting.

Hammad said that Abbas met and meets with Israeli figures in order to explain the Palestinian point of view, stressing that these meetings are not part of the negotiations.

Mohammed Shtayyeh, a senior member of Fatah’s central committee, confirmed that “There will be a meeting on Sunday between President Abbas and Mr. Mofaz in Ramallah. This comes after a request for a meeting from Mofaz.”

Shtayyeh played down the importance of this meeting, “Such a meeting is nothing new and comes in the framework of president Abbas’s meetings with a full spectrum of actors in the Israeli and Jewish communities,” he said.

“We do not count much on such meetings nor believe that the Israeli government as currently composed can offer anything serious on the peace process,” he said, “we do not think that Mufaz will present political ideas that we can work with,” he added.
