The Romanian Genocide
You didn't read about it in the newspaper. You didn't hear about it on the news. Not a single shot was fired.
But you can find it in the statistical yearbooks of Romania, like the 2008 statistical yearbook, in the "vital statistics".
Look at the "deaths" and "mortality rate" columns;.
Look at the evolution and match the post-communist figures against the figures before 1989.
The communist regime has been oficially deemed criminal in post-communist Romania (and I'm not saying that it wasn't).
But under this criminal regime, there was less death in Romania than after it.
You can see the number of deaths increasing in the eighties. This shows a correlation between living standards and number of deaths - as we Romanians know what happened in the 1980s.
In 1989, the last year of the communist regime, 247306 people died in Romania.
To the right, I subtracted this value from the number of deaths each year between 1990 and 2007. You can see that, in post-communist Romania, since 1991, more people died each year than in 1989.
If you sum up all the differences you see on the last handwritten column, you get a grand total of 294841 more deaths.
Despite freedom, despite tremendous progress in medical science, despite a dramatically smaller population, still more people died in 2007 capitalist Romania than in 1989 communist Romania. And 2007 was a good year for Romania.
